Catesby Tunnel
Catesby is a colossus of a tunnel, both in terms of length and gauge. Originally planned as a cutting, its existance is due entirely to the owner of the Catesby estate who did not want unsightly trains blotting his landscape.
The 2,997 yard tunnel was cut by T Oliver and Son as part of the Great Centrals London Extension, construction contract No.4. It features five ventilation shafts, grouped towards the southern end.
The northern section and approach cutting are badly flooded these days.
